Plants that Grow & Flower Fast

Many native plants are in for the long haul : grow massive root systems designed to hold fast for decades and bring water and nutrients up from the depths to support seed production for years to come. Annuals take a faster approach: grow and bloom fast before anything else catches up, make massive quantities of seed before the frost kills, fling seed everywhere, repeat.

Why use native annuals? Perennial native plants can take a couple of years or more before they begin to bloom. Annuals by definition flower in the first year and can provide needed pollinator resources while the slow-and-steady crowd fill in. They can also compete with weeds and help hold the space, often reseeding until the longer-lived plants take over. Annuals are also great for the difficult habitats they evolved to fill. Jewelweed and Indian Tobacco like stream banks that are always being reshaped. Rock Harlequin likes climbing mountains, flinging its seed across the stones to colonize new nooks and crannies. Annuals, like all native plants, have insects and birds that seek out their unique offerings. Don't forget to add your annuals!
