White Rattlesnake Root - Nabalus albus
Nabalus albus, also know as Prenanthes alba, White Rattlesnake Root, Lion's Foot, or White Lettuce, is a perennial wildflower native to Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. This is a shade-lover, found mostly in moist deciduous woodlands, ideally in dappled shade. Deep shade, excessive sun, or dry soils can reduce its normally impressive height of 4 to 5 feet, but it is tolerant of sandy soils with adequate shade and accessible moisture. Under favorable conditions, this is a tall, narrow plant with a showy array of nodding flowers and really tremendous, lush foliage. The late August through fall blooms attract bumblebees and other pollinators, including nocturnal pollinators such as moths. Best for woodland gardens and shaded native plantings.
