Pointed Broom Sedge - Carex Scoparia

Carex Scoparia, also known as Lance-fruited Oval Sedge or Pointed Broom Sedge, is a perennial sedge native to Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. This clumping sedge is on the short side, reaching about 2 feet in height. It prefers moist soils and full sun in open areas such as shorelines, riverbanks, meadows, marshes, ditches, and seasonal pools, but also handles medium garden soil.
 
In addition to adding texture and a bright pop of green to a planting, this sedge hosts the caterpillars of a variety of moths and skipper butterflies. The seeds are eaten by waterfowl, songbirds, rodents, and some turtles. Good for rain gardens, shorelines, streams, ponds, ditches, and flowerbeds.
