Cutleaf Anemone - Anemone multifida

Cutleaf Anemone - Anemone multifida

Anemone multifida, also known as Windflower, Cutleaf Anemone, or Red Anemone, is a perennial wildflower native to Michigan and the sandy or rocky shorelines of the Upper Peninsula. This diminutive plant grows in a loose clump 8 to 20 inches tall, topped with flower-like sepals that range from white to creamy yellow to hot pink to red, in bloom late spring through summer. Cutleaf Anemone prefers well drained, coarse soil with regular moisture, and tolerates low fertility soil. It is not fond of clay or dense soil. Tolerates bright shade and can be found in open woodlands in other parts of its range, but prefers part to full sun. May spread a bit by rhizome, makes a good border plant, and supports birds, bees, and butterflies.
