Northern Maidenhair Fern - Adiantum pedatum
Adiantum pedatum, or Northern Maidenhair Fern, is a perennial plant native to Michigan and the U.P. It is a forest plant well suited to much of the UP, preferring moist, humus-rich, acidic soils in full shade. It needs partial to full shade and rich soil to thrive, growing 1 to 2.5 feet tall with rosettes of fronds growing in tiers.
Ferns do not flower, but this plant adds a great deal of structure and texture to a shaded garden, woodland habitat, or naturalized soft landing zone under mature deciduous trees. Forms colonies over time but is a slow spreader. Deer resistant.
